Recently, some customers asked our technicians whether 20# steel and Q235 steel are interchangeable, so today we will analyze the performance of the two.

20# steel performance profile: 20# steel has relatively high cold deformation plasticity, and usually can be processed by bending, rolling, flange and hammer arching. The welding performance of arc welding and contact welding of 20# steel is better, and the thickness is small during gas welding. During cutting, the cold drawn or normalized state is better than the annealed state, and it is generally used to manufacture pipe products with low stress and high toughness requirements.

This kind of steel belongs to high quality low carbon carbon steel, cold extruded, carburized and hardened steel. The steel has low strength, good toughness, plasticity and weldability. Normalizing can promote the spheroidization of the steel, refine the massive proeutectoid ferrite, and improve the cutting performance of the blank less than 160HBS.

Q235 performance introduction: Q represents the yield limit of q235, and the latter 235 refers to the yield value of this material, which is about 235MPa. And as the thickness of the material increases, its yield value decreases. Due to the moderate carbon content, the comprehensive performance is better, the strength, plasticity and welding properties are better matched, and the application is the most extensive. It is widely used in construction and engineering structures. It is used to make steel bars or to build factory buildings, high-voltage power transmission towers, bridges, vehicles, boilers, containers, ships, etc., and also a large number of mechanical parts with low performance requirements. It can be used for various abrasive handles and other unimportant abrasive parts. Q235 steel is used as the punch material, and it is used directly after quenching without tempering. The hardness is 36~40HRC, which solves the phenomenon of the punch chipping during use.

The above is a brief introduction of 20# steel and q235 steel. The two can replace each other in some occasions. The mechanical properties of the two steels are still relatively close. 20# is stricter than Q235 in terms of performance requirements. It can be interchanged in less demanding occasions, but it is necessary to pay attention to the replacement of load bearing, stamping and other applications, and it can only be replaced after testing and verifying that the various properties can meet the requirements.
